It's the first day of seventh grade, and Victor runs into his friend Miguel, who's walking around making a strange face. Miguel says he noticed that in magazines all the male models have the same expression. They're shown with their arm around a beautiful woman and a scowl. They're shown sitting by a swimming pool, with a scowl. Miguel says girls like that expression, and that a little while ago when he was scowling a girl stared at him. Victor decides to try it, and sure enough, a girl looks at him.
But there's one girl in particular that Victor wants to impress. Her name is Teresa, and Victor go so far as to sign up for a French class in order to get close to her and get to know her, with the goal of getting her to be his girlfriend.
As the class begins, the teacher, Mr. Bueller, says "Bonjour," and a few kids hesitantly answer "Bonjour." Then he asks if anyone in the class speaks French. Victor doesn't speak a word of French, but he wants so badly to impress Teresa, that he raises his hand and says yes. The teacher perks right up, and says to him, "Tres bien. Parlez-vous francais?" Victor doesn't know what to say. The teacher looks at him and says something else in French. The class is quiet, waiting for Victor to answer. He can feel everyone staring at him, and he starts sweating like crazy. He tries to get out of it by making noises that sound like French. "La me vava con le gra" he says uncertainly. Mr. Bueller looks at him with a curious expression, and asks him to repeat himself. Victor doesn't feel too good. Teresa is sitting a few desks away, and she must be thinking "what an idiot!" The teacher asks him to speak up. Without looking at him, Victor murmurs "Franc oh sis gaga en septiembre." It looks as though the teacher is about to figure out what Victor is doing. What should Victor do now? What would you do in his situation? If you've ever found yourself in an embarrassing situation, you'll laugh when you read "Primero de secundaria" ("Seventh grade") in Gary Soto's book, "Beisbol en Abril."

Es el primer día del séptimo grado, y Victor se topa con su amigo Miguel que anda poniendo una cara extraña. Miguel dice que ha notado que en las revistas de todos los modelos masculinos tienen la misma expresión. Aparecen con un brazo alrededor de una mujer bella y una mueca. Aparecen sentados junto a una piscina, con una mueca. Miguel dice que esa expresión les gusta a las chicas, y que hace un rato una chica lo miró muy fijamente cuando haca una mueca.
Pero hay una chica en especial a la cual Victor quiere impresionar. Se llama Teresa, y Victor hasta se inscribe en la clase de francés para estar cerca de ella y conocerla mejor, con la meta de hacerla su novia.
Al comienzo de la clase, el maestro, el Señor Bueller, dice "Bonjour" y todos responden muy inseguros "Bonjour". Entonces pregunta si alguien en la clase habla francés. Victor no habla nada de francés, pero como quiere tanto impresionar a Teresa, alza la mano y dice que sí . El maestro se alegra, y le dice "Trés bien. ¿Parlez-vous francais?" Victor no sabe que decir. El maestro lo mira y dice a"La me vava con le gra" dice con inseguridad. El Señor Bueller arruga la cara con gesto de curiosidad, y le pide que hable más fuerte. Victor se siente muy mal. Teresa está sentada a unos cuantos escritorios de distancia, seguramente pensando que Victor es un tonto. El maestro le pide que hable ms fuerte. Sin mirarlo, Victor murmulla "France oh sisi gaga en septiembre" Parece que pronto el maestro se va a dar cuenta de lo que está haciendo Victor. ¿Qué debe hacer? ¿Qué harías tu en su lugar?
