Have you ever wished you could be transported to the future, for example to the day of your college graduation? You have to be careful-- because even the best wishes can turn out badly. In this book, Damian, a thirteen-year-old boy, has the opportunity to have his dreams for the future come true... with mixed results.
After his father's death, Damian decides to explore the mysterious attic of his house, where his father stored a collection of archaeological artifacts. Without telling his Mom, Damian starts to visit the attic daily to explore his dead father's belongings. There is an Egyptian sarcophagus, covered with dust, shrunken human heads, exotic masks and other strange objects.
One day, Damian finds among all these objects a strange book covered in black velvet, closed with a clasp shaped like a twisted snake. The book is titled ARTE MAGNA. Damian leafs through the book, which deals with magic, such as how to make pacts with demon spirits, how to call up the dead, or how to do exorcisms. But nothing calls his attention like the chapter that explains how to make an amulet that can be used to predict and alter the future.
To make the amulet, Damian needs to gather together some strange objects: yellow wax, dirt from the cemetery, nails, and even drops of his own blood. He also needs to recite a spell while he kills a toad and removes its heart with a knife. With his friend, Cloe, Damian gathers together everything he needs, and they prepare the spell at midnight in a deserted park.
The next morning, with the amulet around his neck, Damian refuses to get up to go to school. He's sick of his teacher’s orders and the obligations in his life. So he decides to try the spell. He says, "I want to be a soldier," a wish he's had for years. For him, the idea sounds like a dream, but it turns out to be a nightmare. And every wish that comes true turns out worse. Damián hojea el libro, que trata de mágia, por ejemplo, cómo hacer pactos con los espíritus infernales, cómo invocar a los muertos, o cómo hacer los exorcísmos. Pero nada llama tanto la atención como el captulo que explicala fabricación de un amuleto con el cual puede anticipar y manejar el futuro.
Para fabricar el amuleto, Damián necesita juntar cosas raras: cera amarilla, tierra del cementerio, clavos, hasta gotas desu propia sangre. También necesita recitar un hechizo mientras que mata un sapo y le saca el corazón con un cuchillo. Con una amiga, Cloe, Damián recoge todo lo necesario y a medianoche en un parque desierto, prepara el hechizo.
A la mañana siguiente, con el
amuleto prendido de su cuello, Damián no quiere levantarse para ir al colegio.
Está harto de los órdenes de sus profesores, y las obligaciones de su vida.
Así Damián decide probar el hechizo. Dice "Quiero ser soldaldo", un deseo
que tiene desde años. Para él, la idea parece un sueño, pero sale una pesadilla.
