In their isolated house in the countryside, on a freezing winter night, Lucy and her brother Hugh simultaneously bolt awake out of twin nightmares. Soaked in a cold sweat and gripped by an unexplainable fear, they get up to see what awoke them. They quickly discover the nightmare is not over.
Although they seem to be in their home, everything is different...all the furniture, all the pictures on the walls. Their mother has vanished from her bedroom, which also is furnished differently. It's as though Lucy and Hugh are in their house, but somehow transported to another time.
Confused and frightened, they set out to ask for help from a neighbor, but an invisible force prevents them from straying far. In the house, they notice that nothing is really solid, either, but ghostlike, such that they can't grasp anything.
Soon they hear voices and cries, and encounter two ghosts who seem very real. They are twins, a boy and a girl, about 6 years old. The twins are sobbing, because their parents died. The other ghost is the twins' aunt. The aunt is bitter and cruel, and she treats her niece and nephew very badly. Lucy and Hugh find out that the aunt has plans to murder her unsuspecting niece and nephew so that she can receive their inheritance.
Lucy and Hugh are horrified, and want to prevent the murders from happening, but how? The ghosts can't hear or see them, so they can't warn them. They can't grab or move anything in this ghostly house. It seems to them that they were somehow transported to this time to save the twins, but how can they do it? Aunque están en su casa, todo está diferente. Todos los muebles, y todo lo que antes se vea en las paredes es diferente. Lo que es peor, su madre no está en su cuarto, que de todos modos ya no parece como su cuarto, con la cama y todo diferente y en diferentes lugares. Es como si estuvieran en su casa, pero en otrapoca.
Salen afuera, a ver si pueden pedir ayuda al vecino a un kilómetro de distancia. Pero una fuerza invisible se loimpide... cuando llegan hasta un punto al borde de su terreno, simplemente pierden toda fuerza, están como paralizados. Yotra cosa rara... si tratan de agarrar o tocar las cosas, no pueden.Es como si toda la casa y las cosas dentro se hubieran convertido enfantasmas. Como si hubieran sido transportados a otra poca, pero enla misma casa.
Entran de nuevo en la casa. Allá oyen voces y llantos, y se encuentran con unos fantasmas que parecen muy reales. Hay dosniños gémelos de como 6 años de edad, un niño y una niña. Los gemelos estn sollozando, porque sus padres se murieron. La otra fantasma es la de la tía delos gémelos. La tía es amarga y cruel, y trata muy mala sus sobrinos. Lucy y Hugh se enteran de que la tía tiene planes de matar a sus sobrinos para recibir su herencia. Los niños no tienen la menor sospecha de los planes de sutía. Lucy y Hugh están horrorizados; quieren impedirlos asesinatos, pero ¿cómo lo van a hacer? Estos fantasmas no pueden oír lo que dicen, ni verlos, asíque no pueden simplemente advertir a los niños.
