Lucky us, we have our May meeting set for the sunny Mission District of San Francisco! The meeting date has been set for the 25th and we’ll start at our usual 9:30 a.m. time so set your calendars and alarms and bring yourself and a colleague to the meeting. We’re hoping to have a chance to congratulate Luis Herrera, Director of the San Francisco Public Library System on being named LJ’s 2012 Librarian of the Year on that day so another great BPLG meeting is in the works.

A Day at the Races! BPLG Scholarship Fundraiser – June 10th

It’s that time again! Time for the BPLG traditional Day at the Races scholarship fundraiser. Join us at Golden Gate Fields on June 10th for friends, food and horses (at least that’s the order I have). The last day to place your order is May 31st , so order your tickets early to make sure you don’t miss out . Then put on your traditional race day hat (no baseball hats though) and meet and greet with your BPLG friends and their families. Bring your appetite because the food is plentiful and if you enjoy watching the horses, cheer on your favorite jockey or cheer the fact that our scholarship fund is growing with your help!

The San Jose Public Library System has several positions to fill in the following areas: Librarian I/II -Archivist Librarian for the San Jose History Center, Librarian I/II Cataloging Librarian, Librarian I/II Web Librarian, Librarian I/II (this involves 2 full-time and 2-3 part-time benefited positions). Contra Costa County Library is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Community Library Manager. There is currently one full-time position available in Concord and 3 other positions in in locations within the system. The person in this position will be responsible for the day to day administration and operation of a Community Library. This includes supervision of personnel, development of material collections, development and implementation of a plan of service among other duties. The list established from this position will remain active for six months. The final date for applying for this position is May 25th. There is a half-time Accessioning and Processing Archivist position open at the University of California, Berkeley Bancroft Library. This position manages the intake of manuscript collections and supervises the support staff consisting of student assistants and volunteers. Applications received by June 1st will be considered. The City of Daly City is seeking to fill 2 Librarian II positions. Branch Manager positions are open at the Westlake Branch Library and also the John Daly Branch Library. Bravo! Bravo! For the Big Read Dinner and Panel

If you made it to the dinner/fundraiser and Big Read Panel at the San Leandro Public Library on Saturday March 24th, then you were treated to a wonderful night of dinner with friends, and an intelligent panel discussion. A big round of thanks to the San Leandro Library staff and to BPLG member Armando Rivera for putting this all together. The dinner was great, the company was enjoyable and the panel discussion with editor Jorge Hernández was enlightening. We’re proud of our BPLG members who participated alongside Jorge, in the discussion of Sun, Stone and Shadows, a collection of some of the finest 20th century Mexican short stories.

SJSU AB540 2012 Symposium Saturday April 21, 2012

Thanks to Peggy Cabrera for forwarding the information on this event to hear updates on serving AB540 students. The event is sponsored by the Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association and the Mexican American Studies Department.

Due to their immigration status thousands of students encounter barriers to their higher education dreams in California. The symposium will provide information to students, parents and adminstrators on AB540, AB130 and AB131. The symposium includes admissions advising and alternative financial aid opportunities. In addition, current AB540 students will share their experiences during and after attending University.

BPLG Meeting, Fundraiser and the Big Read Panel Discussion: Saturday March 24th – San Leandro Public Library

A Saturday event? Yes, you read it right, so break away from your usual routine and join us for a short meeting, a dinner/fundraiser and the Big Read Panel Discussion at the San Leandro Public library. Even if you can’t make it for the entire list of events, we’d love to see you for any portion of the day so mark the date and time on your calendar and make plans to join us for a little something different.

The BPLG meeting starts at 4:00, at 5:00 BPLG Members and supporters are invited to participate in a dinner fundraiser (see details below for RSVP information and cost). Then the Big Read begins at 7:00 so stay for a panel discussion of Sun, Stone and Shadows, a superb collection of some of the finest 20th century Mexican short stories, edited by Jorge Hernández. The panel will be comprised of BPLG members and the discussion will be lead by Jorge Hernández himself. It looks to be a an interesting evening and a great opportunity for BPLG.

March 5th ¡Chicana Power! Book Signing – Martin Luther King Library, San José

Join the crowd at San José State on March 5th for light refreshments, a book talk and cultura! Maylei Blackwell Assistant Professor, Department of Chicano/a Studies and Women’s Studies at UCLA will discuss her book ¡Chicana Power! : Contested Histories of Feminism in the Chicano Movement in the Cultural Heritage Center on the 5th floor of the MLK Library on campus. This is the first book-length study of women’s involvement in the Chicano Movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. If you were there at the time, and even if you weren’t, it will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about and discuss the struggles over gender and sexuality within the Chicano Movement.

Knowledge River Accepting Applications for Cohort 11: Deadline March 1, 2012

The Knowledge River (KR) will accept applications for KR cohort 11 until March 1, 2012. ”Knowledge River educates culturally and linguistically sensitive library and information professionals to serve and represent Latino and Native American cultural communities. This is a program for students interested in earning their M.A. studying information resources, libraries, archives as well as museums.”

Applicants must be accepted for admission into the University of Arizona’s School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS). Some of our very own BPLG members have gone through this program and it’s an excellent opportunity to get into the field and focus on your interest in serving the Latino and Native American cultural communities.
